Meet Your Match!

As I’ve mentioned in the past, I have been working with the Seattle Animal Shelter to help improve the adoption rate of older pets. One of the goals was to engage with our senior population. We are holding our first info session at the Greenwood Senior Center on Wednesday February 14th from 1—2:30pm.  This is a great opportunity to learn about available pets at the shelter,  how to become a foster parent, and learn about their Fospice (hospice for fosters) program.

This is a FREE event and should be a lot of fun!  We’ll have a couple of pets on hand for you to meet.  Have questions?  Call Sandra at 206-271-7100. Greenwood Senior Center | 525 N 85th St, Seattle

Could One of These Older Gentlemen Be Mr. Right?

Doobie is a regal 17 year old who has a great temperament and loves to be petted and brushed. As an older gentleman, he prefers a quiet household.

Ed is an 11 year old super confident guy! He’s never met a stranger and is curious about everything. He enjoys attention and has excellent manors.

Cloud is a beautiful 15 year old Siamese who enjoys making new friends. He is well behaved, but does have a tendency to chew on house plants.  Just offer him cat grass instead.

Meet The Incredibly Cute Mr. Dash!

Dash is adorably cute!  This little love bug was found as a stray.  The streets are a tough place and he was very shy when he first arrived at the shelter.  However, in foster care Dash has been blossoming and is now ready for adoption.

Dash is a super snuggler once he gets to know and trust you. He enjoys walks and having his belly rubbed. He would do best in a dog experienced, adult only household.  Strangers and other dogs make him nervous.  Dash does well with positive reinforcement as he continues to build confidence and trust.

In 2018 Adopt Don’t Shop!

Reminder that the Seattle Animal is a great resource for all types of pets!  They typically have a good selection of dogs, cats, bunnies, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice and occasionally birds and reptiles.  If you are thinking of adding a new family member this year, I encourage you to check out the Seattle Animal Shelter first.

Meet Blue!

Blue is a fun-loving, friendly, energetic 5 year old boy looking for a dog-savvy family to join.  He loves people, is very playful and highly treat motivated. Blue would be a great companion for active people. He would be happy to join you on a run, hike, or long walks.  At the end of the day he looks forward to snuggle time. Blue would be best as a solo dog.

Why We Support the Seattle Animal Shelter

Steve and I are super excited about supporting the Seattle Animal Shelter again in 2018!  As you all know by now, I am a huge animal lover!  My home life includes 12 pet pigeons in an outdoor aviary, a ring neck dove and pionus parrot in my home office, two 3 year old cats and, thankfully, a very easy-going husband! All but one of the pigeons are rescues, the dove is a rescue and our 31 year old parrot was adopted 11 years ago, and, of course, the two cats were adopted from the Seattle Animal Shelter and PAWS. I’m a huge believer in giving animals a second chance.

The Seattle Animal Shelter is, for the most part, a no-kill shelter.  Meaning, they will not  euthanize an animal because of space or time.  They rely heavily on volunteers and donations. Please help us to help improve the lives  of these shelter animals!

We donate a portion of every transaction to the Help The Animals Fund. Donations to this fund are put to work in numerous ways to promote animal welfare. The top priority is to rehabilitate animals that are the subject of cruelty and neglect. Donations to this fund pay for veterinary care for shelter animals along with promoting educational outreach to prevent homeless, unwanted and abused animals. This fund also supports the shelter’s foster and volunteer program ensuring that each animal receives loving care while at the shelter.

With much appreciation – Sandra & Steve

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a fabulous holiday season and safe New Year’s eve celebration.  George and I spent New Year’s eve afternoon with my sister.  My sister and I share a love of animals.  Believe it or not, she has more pets than I do!  My favorite of hers is Shasta—a 30 something cockatoo. Shasta is such a sweet girl!

I always love the beginning of a new year! I like the anticipation of what the new year will bring.  This year I am looking forward to a long overdue kitchen remodel.  During this remodel, we are also updating our family room and George is  finally getting his dream train room for his Lionel trains from his childhood. He has been planning his train room for years! I am, of course, not looking forward to the disruption and mess.  But hopefully it will all be over in the first quarter.  I’m also a bit nervous about how our cat Murray will react.  As a lot of you know, he was pretty much feral when we adopted him.  He is still a nervous little guy and we don’t want him to regress and develop bad behaviors again.  Wish us luck!

Best Wishes in the New Year—Sandra

Congrats to Bun-Bun & Cali

I thought you would all appreciate knowing that this chubby cheeked cutie is Pending Adoption!  Beauty queen Cali was also adopted in December.  There are still several kitties waiting patiently for a new home. Visit the Seattle Animal Shelter online to see everyone who is available for adoption.

Big Thank You for Everyone
Who Donated Pet Food!

We wanted to thank everyone who brought in pet food during our pet food drive.  Right before Christmas, Steve and I  brought the dog food to the Seattle Animal Shelter and got to spend some time with the lovely Miss Nellie!  She had a hard time sitting still for a photo.

The wind was softly blowing and she was distracted by the leaves blowing around and all of the interesting things to smell and investigate.  It was hard not to laugh at her! This lucky girl was adopted pretty quickly. When we had gone in, there was already someone interested in her.  We wish her a long and happy life!

Thanks so much for your continued support!—Steve and Sandra

Meet Kane!

Kane is a super happy-go-lucky boy who loves to please his people!  He is 7 years old and house trained.  He knows several commands such as sit, stay, leave it, heel, wait and of course a pro at catching treats! His leash manners are improving and he loves long walks, hikes, runs—he’s up for any activity.

He is well behaved and would do fine with kids 10 years or older.  He also gets along well with most other dogs.

Kane qualifies for the Senior Citizen Discount program.

Gus is a super handsome older gentleman. He’s been in foster care since July. Like most cats, he is shy at first, but easily warms up once he feels safe.  He enjoys being groomed and playing with feather toys and anything with catnip!  He’s social but is not a lap cat.

This photo doesn’t show it, but Gus is a Manx.  To meet this handsome boy, please call the Foster Hotlline—206.684.0685

Thinking of Adding a Family Pet for Christmas?

Holidays can be a great time to add a new furry friend to the household.  Family members often have additional time off and the kids are home to help welcome your new addition to the family.  If you are thinking of enriching your home life with a new pet, I implore you to ADOPT don’t shop! The Seattle Animal Shelter has several lovely cats and dogs looking for their forever home.

Animals come to the shelter for a variety of reasons. Some are strays, their owners have died, or their loving owners can no longer adequately provide for their pets and have surrendered them.  All of these situations are heart-breaking. But I’m always amazed at the resiliency of these animals!  I think these shelter animals should have a special place in all of our hearts.  They’ve been through a lot and deserve a loving home!

Meet Cali!

This beautiful lady is a social butterfly!  She loves to meet new people and tell you all about her day. A good  belly rub and head scratches are on her daily agenda. If you are looking for a social snuggle bunny, Cali is your girl!

While she enjoys people, she does want to be your only pet.  In Cali’s humble opinion, her personality is big enough for one household! She is declawed and needs to be a strictly indoor girl. She’s pretty easy-going and should do well in a home with children.  Come meet this perfect kitty today!

A New Chance at Happiness

OK…how can you not fall in love with this cute little face! Bun Bun has been in foster care since July 2017.  In that time this very scared and skinny boy has blossomed into a love bug with a big purr!  He loves to be petted.!  He still gets nervous, but with continued patience from his humans, each day he becomes a bit more confident.

As someone who adopted a very scarred kitty three years ago, I can’t tell you how rewarding it is to watch them grow with confidence week by week.  Our Murray was practically feral when we adopted him through PAWS in Fall 2014.  It was several months before I could even pick him up. Now he’s a super sweet boy who LOVES his tummy petted and eagerly jumps in my lap for attention.

Bun Bun has a very sweet nature and your patience will be rewarded with tons of loving purrs from him!

Giving Thanks!

The month of November brings about an extra opportunity to say Thank You for being a valuable part of our business. We are very grateful for your confidence and loyalty and would be remiss if we didn’t sincerely say thank you for your support over the years.

As most begin to prepare for the holiday season, plan Thanksgiving get-togethers and the like, it’s easy to become wrapped up in all that we have to do to ensure a fun and joyful time. It is easy to overlook all that we have to be thankful for. Gratitude though is an attitude that is contagious!

May the good life be yours in abundance, not only this holiday season, but throughout the coming year.

With Gratitude – Sandra & Steve

Help Support YouthCare!

Windermere and the Seattle Seahawks are teaming up to #tacklehomelessness in our community. As part of that campaign, our office is participating in Windermere’s “We’ve Got You Covered” winter drive.

Through November 10, we are collecting new hats, scarves, gloves/mittens and warm socks for YouthCare, a non-profit that provides support and services to homeless youth throughout the Puget Sound area.

Each night in Seattle, nearly 1,000 young people are homeless. And with the winter months quickly approaching, YouthCare is in dire need of survival supplies to keep homeless youth warm and dry during the long, wet winter.

You can drop off your donations at our office: 12250 Greenwood Ave N, Seattle WA 98133

Thanks for your support!

Retired Police Dog Honored

In the spirit of saying Thanks, I thought this story was sweet and appropriate. Ziva was recently honored at the 7th Annual Raining Cats & Dogs Auction in October that benefited the Seattle Animal Shelter Foundation.

In her long career, Ziva has been on more than 5,000 police calls, 81 felony arrests, and 23 misdemeanor arrests. Ziva earned her Washington State Police Canine Association certificate on February 10, 2011. The next day, she caught her first suspect.

In addition to her impressive crime fighting experience, Ziva is also a natural at fund raising. She has been a notable K9 and community ambassador, demonstrating her tracking skills at more than 100 events in the Seattle area. Over the years Ziva has raised more than $40,000 for local animal shelters and organizations including the Seattle Animal Shelter Foundation.

As Ziva gets close to her 10th birthday she is getting ready for retirement. We hope she enjoys many happy years in retirement! Hopefully she’ll make time for special appearances for fund raising for her fellow furry friends.

Let’s Find Chloe a Home!

She is still shy at first, but with just a little patience she blossoms into a fun-loving dog. She is house trained and enjoys her people. She does better in a quieter environment with no cats to chase. She does get along well with other well-mannered dogs.

Happy Halloween!

Creeptacular!

In honor of Halloween, please visit the Seattle Animal Shelter on Saturday October 28 for their first annual Creeptacular on Saturday, October 28th from 12 – 3pm. The shelter will be transformed into a creepy, crawly and scary haunt. Enter if you dare!

The Critter Team has been working on this event for several months. The goal of the event is to educate people on the other types of pets that the Seattle Animal Shelter often gets, such as lizards, rats, guinea pigs, mice, gerbils, rabbits and birds.

The PNW Herpetological Society will also be at the event with reptiles from their members.   There will be interactive critter exhibits, including feeding and holding animals!

Costumes are encouraged. There will be a photo booth for some Creeptacular selfies. This should be a super fun and educational event. Bring the entire family. The Seattle Animal Shelter is located at 2061 15th Ave W, Seattle, WA 98119.

Why Do Black Cats & Dogs Take Longer to Adopt?

Peruse through the online photos of available dogs and cats for adoption and you will notice a trend. There are more black, or mostly black cats and dogs than other colors. Why is this? There are, of course, some silly superstitions around black cats and black dogs. But the real culprit is a marketing issue.

Black cats and dogs are harder to capture in photos. As Steve and I always say, if we can’t get people excited with our photos, we’re not going to get them through the door. It’s the same for marketing available pets for adoption! We all judge by what we see.

A 1992 study presented in Animal Welfare journal showed that 65% of participants preferred dogs with lighter coats. Another study in 2013 found that participants rated yellow dogs significantly higher than black dogs on personality qualities such as agreeableness, conscientiousness and emotional stability. The same study found that participants considered black dogs the least friendly. This was all based solely on a photograph!

Black cats have similar problems. While a few cultures, like Japan, consider black cats to be good luck, for centuries they were considered evil. In the 14th century black cats were targeted because of their (ridiculous) connection to witches. These poor cats were killed in masses. Some historians speculate that this may have contributed to the proliferation of rodents and consequently the spread of the plague.

The real problem for modern day black cats and dogs in shelters is conveying their personalities in photos. If you have a black cat or dog, you know how hard it is to get a really great shot that captures their funny, quirky personality. Our cat Samantha is a long haired, beautiful black cat, who is impossible to get a good photo of. On the other hand, our Siamese mix Murray photographs very well—even with his cross eyes! In fact, when we were looking for a second cat, I showed my husband Samantha’s photo and he rejected her because of the photo. However, I was attracted to her bio and personality qualities that her foster family posted, so I went to visit her, and of course the rest is history. Even though I actually picked her out, she is definitely George’s cat!

These three lovely ladies have been available for adoption for some time now. Maybe you know of someone who is looking to add a cat to the family. If so, please have them check out these black beauties. Zoe, Esther and Samantha have been waiting way too long for their forever home!

Why We Support the Seattle Animal Shelter

As you all know by now, I am a huge animal lover! My home life includes 12 pet pigeons in an outdoor aviary, a ring neck dove and pionus parrot in my home office, two 3 year old cats and, thankfully, a very easy-going husband! All but one of the pigeons are rescues, the dove is a rescue and our 31 year parrot was adopted 11 years ago, and, of course, the two cats were adopted from the Seattle Animal Shelter and PAWS.

Recent Client Review

Steve was a pleasure to work with. He was responsive, very knowledgeable about the neighborhood market, and patient when we were stressed about timing since the purchase of our new house was contingent on the sale of the one Steve brokered.

Helping Harvey and Irma Pets

We are all saddened by the devastation from hurricane Harvey and are now waiting to see the total impact that Irma will bring. As you can imagine there are likely thousands of pets that are displaced throughout the affected regions. To relieve the inundated Houston area shelters, the Seattle Humane Society is bringing in around 100 dogs and 200 cats who were displaced by the storm. If you would like to help, please visit their website at SeattleHumane.org. Here you can register to be a foster home, donate, or buy supplies through Amazon from their wish list.   You can also donate directly to the Houston SPCA at houstonspca.org. The Seattle Animal Shelter is also standing by to assist where needed.

Wings of Rescue is another great avenue for helping animals. This fabulous organization provides air transportation for pets out of disaster areas, and also transportation from overcrowded shelters with high euthanasia rates to non-kill shelters. In anticipation of hurricane Irma they evacuated the entire shelter population at Broward County Humane Society. The animals will be taken to a shelter in Hayward, CA.

4th Annual Kitty Hall

The annual Kitty Hall event in August was a great success! Hundreds of people lined up to play and cuddle with adorable kittens.
Just look at this little cutie! The goal of the event was to increase cat adoptions. The event also raised awareness on the Shelter’s role in the community as a safety net for Seattle’s homeless pet population.

Pet Licensing — Tag to Save Lives!

You may not realize that a significant portion of the Seattle Animal Shelter funding comes from the revenue generated by pet license fees. Your modest annual pet license fee is an investment in the Seattle Animal Shelter, its services and its commitment to help you and your pet find each other again in the event that your furry friend gets lost. .

Let’s face it, pets get lost! Even with the best of intentions of keeping your pet indoors, things happen. Kids leave doors open. The mailman doesn’t latch the gate. The list of possibilities is endless. A current pet license is one important and easy way to be prepared in case of an accident. In 2016 the Seattle Animal Shelter reunited 493 dogs with their owners.

Visible identification is essential for quickly getting lost pets home. A tag tells your pet’s finder that he is owned and lost and not a stray. Microchips are also an essential tool in helping lost pets get reunited with their owners. The phone number on a license tag provides a simple call to action. It doesn’t require special equipment. And of course a tag with your current phone number is also essential. We’ve returned our share of lost dogs because their name, address and phone number was on their tag.

Licensing is super easy! You can apply or renew online at http://www.seattle.gov/animal-shelter/license. You can also renew your license at Crown Hill Pet Supply at 9053 Holman Rd. NW. How easy is that!

Homelessness Affects Pets Too

We are all acutely aware of the growing homeless problem in Seattle. However you may not realize that pets can become homeless too.

Meet 10 year old Bea. Her family that she has loved all her life found themselves homeless. They could no longer provide the care that she needed and brought her to the shelter in search of another home for her. I can’t imagine how hard that must have been for them.

Bea is missing her family, but she is getting used to her current foster family. She gets along well with some dogs. She’s active and enjoys walks and playing. She is well-mannered, eager to please and cooperative. What more could you ask for?

 Cat Foster Homes Needed!

Have you been thinking about getting a cat but aren’t ready for a long-term commitment? Do you need some kitten snuggles in your life? Do you have a soft spot for senior cats? If you answered YES, then become a foster parent!

The foster care program is quite simple. The shelter’s “Help the Animals Fund” subsidizes the costs associated with the foster care program including all pre-approved vet care, food and supplies. You provide a temporary home and love; the Seattle Animal Shelter provides the rest!

Want to Meet More Neighbors? Take Your Dog for a Walk!

As most of you know, August is National Night Out. This annual event encourages neighbors to connect and exchange information.

No matter how long you’ve lived in your neighborhood, it can be challenging to meet a lot of your neighbors. Neighborhoods are only as good as their neighbors. In a world where so many people recognize neighborhood cars over the faces of people who live around us, there’s a lot to be said for making an effort to connect with the people who live up and down the block. So how do you make those first few casual connections which can lead to meaningful bonds?

One of the best ways to meet people is on foot. Want to get to know and be known? Get out there on foot. A routine morning or evening walk is a perfect way to say hello and stop for a chat. Don’t wear headphones. Be open to conversations. Observe who’s out and about and use compliments and open ended questions to spark a little small talk. Another great ice breaker is to take your dog with you. Dogs can be an excellent way of meeting more of your neighbors.

Are you in need of a buddy to take for a walk? Consider adding a dog to the family. Meet Chuckles! (I love her name!) She’s an energetic 4 year old who loves to go on walks. She does need to work on her leash manners, however she is house-trained. She would do best as the only pet in the house. She prefers people over other dogs and cats are just way too tempting to chase.

With Chuckles at your side, you’re bound to meet lots of new neighbors!

And summertime is probably when food banks need your help the most. That’s because children are on break from school and their families have to provide the meals that they normally would get through school meal programs. Six out of seven low-income kids who eat a free or reduced-price school lunch do not get free meals during the summer because they don’t participate in summer meal programs.

So what can you do to help? Does this mean you should go out and buy a bunch of fruits and vegetables to donate to your local food bank? Or maybe donate some extra produce from your home garden? No. The best way that you can help families in need is to donate money to your local food banks. Food banks have agreements or partnerships with distributors/suppliers so that they are able to stretch your donation dollars to purchase more items, usually in bulk. For example, a one-dollar donation—to a food bank hub like Feeding America—can provide 11 meals to families in need. And 68 percent of the foods distributed are healthy foods that align with the USDA Dietary Guidelines.

Kitty Hall is Back!
Kittens Take Over City Hall
Monday 8/21
11am—1pm
600—4th Ave, Seattle

For cat lovers around Seattle, Kitty Hall is the most magical Seattle Animal Shelter event of the year. This is a great opportunity to get your “kitten-fix”. Where else can you play and snuggle with adorable kittens? Last year’s event drew over 500 people. The goal of the event is to promote cat adoption and awareness for the need of kitty foster homes.

This is the fourth year of Kitty Hall. It has become such a popular event that at least five other animal welfare organizations in the US have “copycatted” Seattle and created their own Kitty Hall events.

Thinking about adding a kitty to your family? There are several cats available, but check out these beauties:

Molly is a very sweet older gal who was found as a stray in very poor condition.
It’s a miracle she survived on the streets, given she is completely deaf.
She’s a lucky girl!

Miss Grey was also a stray found on Capital Hill.
She is a happy cat who enjoys attention and people.
She prefers to be the only pet in the home.

Carmen is a regal beauty with a big personality.
She’s very social and likes to chat with her favorite people.
She’s a lap kitty who loves to snuggle.

The Birds and The Bees

OK…apparently I am not very good with the birdy birth-control! Meet Henley. He’s 13 days old in this photo. He was an accident. Our third accident for 2017. As most of you know, I prefer to hand feed our pet pigeons after they are a week old so that they are tame with us as adults.   Luckily for me, I have a business partner who embraces my passion for my pets. I bring Henley to the office with me every day so that I can feed him during the day.   He’s a little cutie and has been a hit with my colleagues who are amazed at how fast he’s grown.

Independence for All!

July 4, 1776 is a momentous day in history for our country AND so is the day we buy our own home! Owning real estate, especially your own home, is a sure-fire Celebration of Independence. I would assume that we can all agree that home ownership is good for everyone.   The more homes that are bought and sold, the more our economy benefits.  As John F. Kennedy said, a rising tide lifts all boats. Homeownership contributes to your overall wealth accumulation. Statistically, the younger you are when you buy your first home, the more wealth you will accumulate for retirement.

Homeownership promotes a sense of community and security. Homeownership has been an essential element to The American Dream for decades and continues to be.

Steve and I are thankful to be in a business that supports that dream. Owning a home embodies the promise of individual autonomy and is the aspiration of many Americans. We are honored to be a part of making that dream a reality for our clients. With the purchase of a home comes the pride of ownership and the sense of belonging to a community where one has a financial stake in the neighborhood. We celebrate our clients independence and achievement of homeownership!

Time to Adopt!

Now that you own a home, it is a time to adopt a furry 4 legged family member! Chunk is a handsome boy who Steve and I met in early June. He is a happy guy who is eager to please. He is active and loves to go on walks. He does need someone to teach him leash manners. He is also a cuddle monster and appreciates quiet time. He would make an excellent addition to a family with older kids, and other active adults. Take one look at his soulful eyes and you will fall in love.

Connecting Senior People with Senior Pets!

I am spearheading a project with the Seattle Animal Shelter to connect our senior population with senior pets from the shelter.  The Seattle Animal Shelter is an open admissions shelter. This means that they accept all Seattle pets to the shelter regardless of their adoptability. Whereas private shelters can pick which pets to accept into their shelter and typically put a limit on the number of chronically ill and older pets they accept because of budget constraints. This is one of the reasons that SAS has a disproportionate amount of senior pets.

Our goal is to connect with local pet-friendly Assisted Living facilities, SHAG, etc., to promote pet adoption or fostering within their community. If you know of someone who you believe can help me move this program forward, please give me a call. I would love to chat with you!

Sandra 206-271-7100

Meet Angel

Angel is a 14 year old Jack Russell Terrier. She ended up at the shelter after her owner passed away. She is a sweet senior gal who enjoys being outside, going on walks and taking time to smell the roses.  She would be ideal for someone who is often home and has no other dogs. She is independent and is not a big cuddler, but does enjoy being petted after she warms up to you. She is an excellent example of a senior pet in need of her own retirement home. At 14, she is a much harder animal to place. However, she would make an excellent companion for an active senior who also enjoys getting out for walks in our beautiful city!

Foster Homes Needed

One of the biggest challenge that the shelter faces is providing quality care for their aging pet population. One special program that they rely on foster homes for is their hospice program. As you can imagine, pet hospice requires a special person who can take on the emotional task of caring for a pet in its final months or weeks of life. The Help The Animals Fund provides monetary assistance for pets in this category. Typically pain-management is the primary need for pets in the hospice program. (This is the fund Steve and I donate to).

Are you up for this challenging but rewarding task? If so, please contact the Seattle Animal Shelter 206-386-7387.

Mother Always Said You Should…

My Mom used to tell me repeatedly to do this and do that, not to do this and not to do that.  ALL, I recall, very valuable advice. Looking back on it, I can say she was, and still is, a very wise woman.

Time reveals, in fact, just about every caring Mother is a Wise Woman.  I can see why we carve out a special day each year to acknowledge Mothers.  So here is a shout out to all Mom’s – Happy Mother’s Day!!

Unfortunately, my Mom’s Mom is no longer here.  I am sure that makes her sad this time of year.  I am sure some reading this can relate and have similar stories.  For ALL those whose Mom is no longer with us, may you remember the best about them. In addition to that, there are also many who never knew their Mom due to unfortunate circumstances. I bet someone played that roll in their life and they too deserve a Happy Mother’s Day!

Regardless, we can celebrate this Mother’s Day knowing Moms both here and no longer here are special in more ways than we can count.
