Last week I had the fun task of helping this little, days old bunny get a chance at survival.  He first came to my attention through the Seattle Animal’s Facebook Critter page.  A friend of one of the contributors found two babies in his driveway and didn’t know what to do.  The advice on the page was for him to try and find the nest and put them back in it.  Finding the nest wasn’t possible, so he put the babies in the brush where he thought the nest might be.  The next day, one of the babies was back on the driveway and had died.

The surviving baby was near the spot that he had left it, but it didn’t appear that the mother rabbit had found her babies.  The advice given to him was to call PAWS. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t take the baby because it was too young. There wasn’t much positive action on the post after that. I was a little surprised that no one from the Facebook group was stepping up to try and get the surviving baby rescued. As you all know, I couldn’t not try and help!

He and I finally connected at 5:30pm on Thursday.  I found out that he lived about 20 minutes Southeast of Issaquah.  Ugh!  He agreed to meet me in Issaquah for the bunny hand off.  Of course at that hour it took me over an hour to get from North Seattle to Issaquah.  On my way, I called my friend Zoe who has lots of rabbit experience. I was hoping to be able to take him to her. She couldn’t take him, however, she called Sarvey Wildlife Center in Arlington to see if they would rescue him. They said yes, but there was no way I was going to be able to get there before they closed.

This little guy was going to be my responsibility for the night. Fortunately Zoe had other friends with rescue experience.  I learned that baby Cottontails have VERY delicate systems and you have to be very careful what you feed them. If you Google “what to feed baby bunnies”, kitten replacement formula comes up as an OK food. However, according to Zoe’s bunny rescue friend kitten replacement formula would not be a good choice for a Cottontail who is just a few days old. She had skunk milk replacement formula for me to use.  I didn’t even know that was a thing! Fortunately she lived in Green Lake and it was easy for me to pop off the freeway on my way back from picking up the little guy.

Feeding him that night was challenging at first.  He felt so delicate in my hand.  He was only a few inches long.  At first I couldn’t get him to eat.  I then found a video of how to feed a baby bunny. (It’s amazing what you can find online).  After that I was able to get him to eat, which was such a relief!  By then it was 9:30PM and it was definitely time for a gin & soda.

The next morning, I was relieved to see that he survived the night with us.  Feeding also went fine that morning.  My fabulous husband, George, drove our little guest up to Sarvey Wildlife Center.

Meet Kaya!
This lovely year old German Shephard/Mix is a bit shy, but it doesn’t take long for her to make friends – if that person has treats, even better! Already house trained, she knows how to ‘sit’, and with her food motivation will respond well to positive reinforcement training. Kaya requires a moderately active, adult only home, preferably with shy/fearful dog experience. She’s good with some other dogs. It will be SO heart-warming and rewarding to watch Kaya blossom and become her true self!

Meet Sunny!

Sunny is a beautiful calico cat who is a sweetheart with lots of love to give. She loves to relax, lounge, scratch her scratching post, and she especially loves getting pets and cuddles with her favorite humans. Sunny would do well living in a forever home that is indoors only, with folks who have had some experience owning cats and who enjoy having a lap cat. She would do well in a quieter home with no kids, and with another cat or dog if it’s the right fit. Sunny has a *sunny* disposition and is sweet as can be!

We wanted to give a shout out to Sarvey Wildlife Care Center after they were so great about taking in the bunny! If you’ve not heard of them, they are an amazing non-profit organization that was established in 1981. They are located on a 5 acre lot in Arlington, WA. Each year approximately 2000 patients are cared for at Sarvey. No animal is ever turned away! Their main goal is to provide food, shelter, and rehabilitation to orphaned and injured wildlife. Sarvey depends on individual donations from their supporters. While they don’t require it, they do appreciate contributions when animals are brought in. On top of all the wonderful work they do for animals, Sarvey also believes that helping wildlife lies in educating humans. They offer over 120 education programs per year, for schools, organizations, and the general public. We love Sarvey!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Last week we added a new member to the family! Meet Cassidy! I picked her up from the Bird and Exotic Pet Clinic of Seattle. She came from a problem household where a rat had attacked her! Luckily, she is all healed up!

I had this whole plan of sneaking her in with the other birds without my husband George noticing-even though he feeds and tends to the aviary every morning. I wanted to have people guess when he would finally notice that there was a 13th bird!

Well it turns out, I underestimated him because he noticed her the very next morning! You see Cassidy is a very sweet and friendly girl, so she just walked right up to George and introduced herself!

She fits right in with everyone just like she’s always been there! As you can see in the pictures, the other birds have welcomed her and accepted her right away.

  “Seas” The Day! Donation & Adoption Success Stories!

We were happy as clams to be able to present the Seattle Animal Shelter with our donation of $1,200 last month! We are able to raise this money due to the wonderful referrals that we receive from our amazing clients!

When we dropped off the check, we got a chance to get a couple pictures

with two of the adoptable animals.

Sypher is an adorable Japanese Chin and Molly is a beautiful orange Tabby cat!

I guess we are good luck charms because both of these cuties were adopted the very next day!

Meet Stella!

Stunning Stella is a medium sized female adult tuxedo cat with big soft fluffy fur and friendly eyes. She is a total sweetheart! She is calm and gets along with everyone. Might she be the perfect addition to your crew?

Mr Jingles is a big sweetheart with a big personality. He’s a social guy who loves attention, although he’s just as fine doing his own thing. This big guy is over 20 lbs and loves to lounge, play and cuddle. Mr. Jingles is polydactyl – his paws have extra toes which make them extra big and fluffy! He loves being groomed, cuddled, played with, and will give you lots of purrs of approval. Mr. Jingles is looking for a forever home with a moderate amount of activity. This big gentle cat would do well with a loving family that can give him time for cuddles.

 

Meet Shubunkin!

Shubunkin is a very beautiful and chill 16-year-old girl. She has a silky smooth Calico coat. She is mellow and likes to lay around but she will accept affection whenever she gets it! Shubunkin loves catnip and once you get to know her she should fit seamlessly into her new forever home!

Family Time!

May is the month that we think of our moms, however it is also a great time to think about all of our family members. In this issue you’ll notice a theme of “togetherness”.  At the shelter there are always pets available that come with a best bud.  Oftentimes the pets are siblings or are a bonded pair.  As you can imagine, it can take longer to adopt a pair of pets versus just one.  In the spirit of family we hope all of our dynamic duos get adopted together!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13^th.  It got me to thinking about family and togetherness. My mom Murretta and father Jim have been residing with us for about five years now. It’s a bit of a throwback for me to have my mom cooking for me again, it has made me very spoiled to say the least.

To all the mom’s out there, Happy Mother’s Day. I for one, am fortunate to see my mom every day.

Together Is A Wonderful Place to Be!

Family absolutely incorporates our pets as well! Most families wouldn’t be the same without them. Sometimes Seattle Animal Shelter takes in pets that already come with another family member. This can seem like a lot to take in, but there is nothing quite like the love between a bonded pair. The shelter always hopes that the pair will be adopted together.

Meet Asami & Korra!

These beautiful girls are a bonded pair and the best of friends. They both will eagerly take all the attention they can get! Asami is the more laid back of the two. She enjoys being picked up and adores head scratches. Don’t forget about Korra though, as she will look up at you with her perfectly lined eyes, competing for your attention. She can also be protective of her best friend Asami. Both girls are 2 years old and would love for you to take them home to join your family!

 

Meet Laverne & Shirley!

You could help these two “… make their dreams come true.”  Laverne and Shirley are best buds who get along well together and would make your family complete. Both girls are 3 years old mixed breeds. They are sweet, gentle, easy to handle, and would love it if you took them on a stroll through your neighborhood or to the park. Laverne loves to talk to you and smile at you with her adorable freckled face. Meanwhile Shirley will be rolled onto her back awaiting a belly rub and some snuggle time. How can you resist these two lovely ladies!

If you’re looking for a pint sized duo for your family, check out William & Teddy! This pair of fun loving guinea pigs are looking for a moderately active household. They would love to be adopted together by a forever family. A nice spacious enclosure would be best to give them plenty of space to play and eat delicious carrots!

Why We Support the Seattle Animal Shelter

The Seattle Animal Shelter is, for the most part, a no-kill shelter.  Meaning, they will not euthanize an animal because of space or time.  They rely heavily on volunteers and donations. Please help us to help improve the lives  of these shelter animals!

We donate a portion of every transaction to their Help The Animals Fund. Donations to this fund are put to work in numerous ways to promote animal welfare. The top priority is to rehabilitate animals that are the subject of cruelty and neglect. Donations to this fund pay for veterinary care for shelter animals along with promoting educational outreach to prevent homeless, unwanted and abused animals. This fund also supports the shelter’s foster and volunteer program ensuring that each animal receives loving care while at the shelter.
