Happy Spring!

It is so nice to be back on Daylight Savings time!  I love getting home at 7pm and it is still light out.  Typically, when I get home several of the birds are out in their aviary yard, so I pop in and spend a little time with them. Ms. Henley gets extra attention, which she loves!  Carl gets his heart medicine, which of course he hates.  Once everyone is in, they are safely secured in their house for the night.

This photo was taken on Easter.  As you can see, their yard needs mowing! In a few weeks I’ll plant pansies for them

Is a Bunny in Your Future?

Spring is the time of year that the Seattle Animal Shelter is fielding more questions about rabbit adoptions. The Shelter, and specifically The Critter Team, loves rabbits! There are many rabbits at the Shelter looking for their forever families! And while they are incredibly cute critters, rabbits are personable, unique animals that need specialized care — so make sure to do your homework prior to adopting.

Here are some quick rabbit facts:

Rabbits live 8 to 12 years.
A rabbit is a long-term commitment. Are all family members committed to caring for your new bunny for the rest of its life?

Rabbits are social butterflies!
Many rabbits need rabbit friends or close human companions to keep them healthy and happy. Make sure you factor in the care, time and space to meet your rabbit’s needs.

Rabbits require a lot of daily care.
Rabbits need daily attention, exercise, playtime, feeding and cleaning. These are the bunny care basics!

Rabbits are extremely fragile animals. While movies and cartoons may portray them doing backflips off walls, the truth is rabbits can be injured very easily. Also, a rabbit’s digestive system is very unique, which requires a specialized diet.

Do your research.

• House Rabbit Society, a nonprofit rabbit rescue and educational organization (https://rabbit.org)
• Talk to a veterinarian who specializes in “pocket pets” or exotics about rabbit care. Not all veterinarians see rabbits. The Bird & Exotic Clinic is a local vet that sees rabbits.  In fact, Dr. Dan at the clinic has bunny dentistry as one of his specialties!
• Visit a local rabbit rescue or animal shelter to learn more about their care needs and meet some cool rabbits!

Rabbits can make excellent pets for the knowledgeable, prepared and committed family. They are smart and interactive, exude personality and have the cutest little hop-hop. They can be litterbox-trained and can solve puzzles, too.

Meet Pippin & Peanut!

Peanut & Pippin are two 10-month-old smart, spunky sisters looking for their forever home together! Peanut is confident, happy, curious and isn’t afraid of anything! She would love to climb and explore in all the bunny-safe areas of her future home. Peanut is a very social, playful girl. While she doesn’t like to be picked up, she loves getting petted. Why We Support the Seattle Animal Shelter

Steve and I are super excited about supporting the Seattle Animal Shelter again in 2018!  As you all know by now, I am a huge animal lover!  My home life includes 12 pet pigeons in an outdoor aviary, a ring neck dove and pionus parrot in my home office, two 3 year old cats and, thankfully, a very easy-going husband! All but one of the pigeons are rescues, the dove is a rescue and our 31 year old parrot was adopted 11 years ago, and, of course, the two cats were adopted from the Seattle Animal Shelter and PAWS. I’m a huge believer in giving animals a second chance.

The Seattle Animal Shelter is, for the most part, a no-kill shelter.  Meaning, they will not  euthanize an animal because of space or time.  They rely heavily on volunteers and donations. Please help us to help improve the lives  of these shelter animals!

We donate a portion of every transaction to the Help The Animals Fund. Donations to this fund are put to work in numerous ways to promote animal welfare. The top priority is to rehabilitate animals that are the subject of cruelty and neglect. Donations to this fund pay for veterinary care for shelter animals along with promoting educational outreach to prevent homeless, unwanted and abused animals. This fund also supports the shelter’s foster and volunteer program ensuring that each animal receives loving care while at the shelter.
