Helping Harvey and Irma Pets

We are all saddened by the devastation from hurricane Harvey and are now waiting to see the total impact that Irma will bring. As you can imagine there are likely thousands of pets that are displaced throughout the affected regions. To relieve the inundated Houston area shelters, the Seattle Humane Society is bringing in around 100 dogs and 200 cats who were displaced by the storm. If you would like to help, please visit their website at SeattleHumane.org. Here you can register to be a foster home, donate, or buy supplies through Amazon from their wish list.   You can also donate directly to the Houston SPCA at houstonspca.org. The Seattle Animal Shelter is also standing by to assist where needed.

Wings of Rescue is another great avenue for helping animals. This fabulous organization provides air transportation for pets out of disaster areas, and also transportation from overcrowded shelters with high euthanasia rates to non-kill shelters. In anticipation of hurricane Irma they evacuated the entire shelter population at Broward County Humane Society. The animals will be taken to a shelter in Hayward, CA.

4th Annual Kitty Hall

The annual Kitty Hall event in August was a great success! Hundreds of people lined up to play and cuddle with adorable kittens.
Just look at this little cutie! The goal of the event was to increase cat adoptions. The event also raised awareness on the Shelter’s role in the community as a safety net for Seattle’s homeless pet population.

Pet Licensing — Tag to Save Lives!

You may not realize that a significant portion of the Seattle Animal Shelter funding comes from the revenue generated by pet license fees. Your modest annual pet license fee is an investment in the Seattle Animal Shelter, its services and its commitment to help you and your pet find each other again in the event that your furry friend gets lost. .

Let’s face it, pets get lost! Even with the best of intentions of keeping your pet indoors, things happen. Kids leave doors open. The mailman doesn’t latch the gate. The list of possibilities is endless. A current pet license is one important and easy way to be prepared in case of an accident. In 2016 the Seattle Animal Shelter reunited 493 dogs with their owners.

Visible identification is essential for quickly getting lost pets home. A tag tells your pet’s finder that he is owned and lost and not a stray. Microchips are also an essential tool in helping lost pets get reunited with their owners. The phone number on a license tag provides a simple call to action. It doesn’t require special equipment. And of course a tag with your current phone number is also essential. We’ve returned our share of lost dogs because their name, address and phone number was on their tag.

Licensing is super easy! You can apply or renew online at http://www.seattle.gov/animal-shelter/license. You can also renew your license at Crown Hill Pet Supply at 9053 Holman Rd. NW. How easy is that!

Homelessness Affects Pets Too

We are all acutely aware of the growing homeless problem in Seattle. However you may not realize that pets can become homeless too.

Meet 10 year old Bea. Her family that she has loved all her life found themselves homeless. They could no longer provide the care that she needed and brought her to the shelter in search of another home for her. I can’t imagine how hard that must have been for them.

Bea is missing her family, but she is getting used to her current foster family. She gets along well with some dogs. She’s active and enjoys walks and playing. She is well-mannered, eager to please and cooperative. What more could you ask for?

 Cat Foster Homes Needed!

Have you been thinking about getting a cat but aren’t ready for a long-term commitment? Do you need some kitten snuggles in your life? Do you have a soft spot for senior cats? If you answered YES, then become a foster parent!

The foster care program is quite simple. The shelter’s “Help the Animals Fund” subsidizes the costs associated with the foster care program including all pre-approved vet care, food and supplies. You provide a temporary home and love; the Seattle Animal Shelter provides the rest!

Why We Support the Seattle Animal Shelter

As you all know by now, I am a huge animal lover! My home life includes 11 pet pigeons in an outdoor aviary, a ring neck dove and pionus parrot in my home office, two 3 year old cats and, thankfully, a very easy-going husband! All but one of the pigeons are rescues, the dove is a rescue and our 31 year parrot was adopted 11 years ago, and, of course, the two cats were adopted from the Seattle Animal Shelter and PAWS. I’m a huge believer in giving animals a second chance.

The Seattle Animal Shelter is, for the most part, a no-kill shelter. Meaning, they will not euthanize an animal because of space or time. They rely heavily on volunteers and donations. Please help us to help improve the lives of these shelter animals!

We donate a portion of every transaction to the Help The Animals Fund. Donations to this fund are put to work in numerous ways to promote animal welfare. The top priority is to rehabilitate animals that are the subject of cruelty and neglect. Donations to this fund pay for veterinary care for shelter animals along with promoting educational outreach to prevent homeless, unwanted and abused animals. This fund also supports the shelter’s foster and volunteer program ensuring that each animal receives loving care while at the shelter.

With much appreciation — Sandra & Steve
